Item (sku number) has failed to export: The account period has closed
QuickBooks Online inventory how to create items
Problem
Orders fail to export to QuickBooks Online
Description
Your Connex error log says:
Products fail to sync from Error: The account period has closed. Item XX has failed to export: The account period has closed. Txn Date=01/01/2025 is before book closing date=06/30/2025
When Connex imports items, it assigns a field called inventory start date as the first of the year. If you closed your books (6/30/2025), after this date (1/1/2025), you have two options. Open the books or create the item in QuickBooks with the proper date:
Solution(s)
Remove closed date in QuickBooks
-
Reopen the closed books (not recommended unless necessary)
-
Go to ⚙️ Settings → Account and Settings → Advanced → Accounting.
-
Under Close the books, change or remove the closing date.
-
You may need the accountant’s password if one was set.
-
After posting, re-close the books to protect prior periods.
-
-
Ask an Accountant user
-
If the closing was intentional (for tax/financial reporting), only your accountant should decide whether to reopen.
-
Turn off inventory tracking in QuickBooks Online
-
Log in as an admin.
-
Go to ⚙️ Settings (top right) → Account and Settings.
-
In the left menu, select Sales.
-
Scroll to the Products and services section.
-
Find Track inventory quantity on hand → Turn off (toggle it off).
-
Click Save, then Done.
Create item in QuickBooks
You can recreate the item to import older sales.
- In QuickBooks, go products and services.
- Locate the item.
- In the field inventory start date, enter 12/31/2024.
